I would not buy the Film Chest compilation unless the reviews praise the quality of the transfers. Those are the same titles in all the other low-quality public-domain collections. Still, Film Chest might be worth a risk if the price is low; they've surprised me once or twice with the quality. If public domain companies wanted to really sell DVD compilations they would put commentary channels on them.
As to your question, what 11 film noirs would I want to see included in a compilation -- I'll have to think about that.
Aren't there a number of Cornell Woolrich films in the public domain? I would like to see a compilation of Mickey Spillane adaptations; there's about four or five independent films based on his stuff. I'd like to see a compilation of the independent films directed by Ida Lupino. Ida was both an independent filmmaker and a film noir director, so far as I know the only woman to hold that honor. As an aside, I like the way she says "You can go to hell or Australia" to Robert Preston in Junior Bonner (Peckinpah, 1972).
"I've been to college, but I can still speak English when business demands it."
Raymond Chandler, 1939.
"All explaining in movies can be thrown out, I think."
Elmore Leonard, 2013.
