Molly Ringwald creates big problems for Patrick McGaw, 30 September 2015
"Malicious" (1995) is a neo-noir film that features Molly Ringwald as a femme fatale making big problems for the man she wants, Patrick McGaw, after he rejects her and goes back to his longstanding girlfriend, Sarah Lassez. McGaw at first could not resist Ringwald's charm and offer of free sex.
The story at first takes it time to develop the tough situation McGaw faces, going somewhat too slowly for my taste. It builds some suspense, however. Just when you think the story has more or less ended, it goes into much higher gear. At that point, it actually moves too quickly, rather rushing over some plot developments and details about Ringwald's character.
Familiarity of story is no impassable vice, but overcoming it requires that something extra. The ingredients are here but the effort seems both bland and not credible. The cast doesn't catch fire. Sudden transitions of character harm the story's impact on us. The movie is watchable but below par.
