Television series typically inflate the quality of the real estate their characters live in, especially since the shows are often set in major cities where the prices are out of control. See Friends, etc. I believe this has genuinely led to unrealistic expectations in real life.
Movies and television in general are VERY sensitive to subjecting audiences to the sight of below-standard accommodations. Novelists aren't - if the protagonist lives in a s***hole, they'll tell us so.
One reason (among many) why I revere The Honeymooners is that the Kramdens' Spartan apartment is so real, and bucks this trend.
