I was in awe at finally seeing "The Chase" in a complete format without splices, scratches, motor boating and chalking. The hallucinatory story even made better sense with missing footage restored.
The Argentine adaptations of Cornell Woolrich scored big with the audience. I agree that "Ladies in Retirement" was something of a misfire. It was the only film that I felt could have been removed from the festival program without anyone objecting.
Rest assured, I was doing something suitably nourish when I elected to skip the final night. "Criss Cross" is a favorite of mine, but I have seen it oftentimes before. I attended a lecture by the veteran Chicago crime reporter John "Bulldog" Drummond. His recollections would have been a fitting "Underworld Story."
