Nice blog post! Undoubtedly the reason that Joe Lampton in Room at the Top was Harvey's defining role is that it made the most use of what he himself was. The film itself is a superb adaptation of John Braine's equally superb novel. Braine's sequel Life at the Top is also excellent; I haven't seen the film version of that.
