Given the repeated failures of "one party" rule, Chicagoans literally have to pay "street taxes" as parking on most arterial streets has an attendant cost. The parking meters of yesteryear have been replaced by kiosks which charge much more than did the coin operated meters. Looking for fast bucks, the city sold its parking meters to a private corporation which expanded the number of streets subject to parking tickets and increased the hourly cost of parking.
My misadventure on opening night, however, involved a private operation that used to charge by the hour. Now, it was necessary to pay for parking in twelve hour increments!
