I'm on my way to the airport, so I'm just going to mention a couple of things. The absence, noted by murky, of strong consensus about Casablanca is important. (I believe that I recently mentioned on The Blackboard that I was asked to write up Casablanca for the latest Silver/Ursini "encyclopedia," and then they canceled the offer because they changed their minds about Casablanca's being a film noir.)
Don's exercise is valuable, but if I were to suggest selecting a film for his analysis, I'd choose one that is in all three of the reference books that I relied on for my table of US spy noirs. Examples include: Escape in the Fog, Ministry of Fear, and several others. The link is below. By choosing a so-called consensus spy noir, Don's analysis would avoid the weakness murky has noted. http://www.filmnoirfile.com/spy-noir-u-s-from-reference-books/
