Besides her career as an actress, Miss Lamarr was co-inventor of a torpedo control device which our Navy stupidly failed to try during WW II.

Considering that the performance of American torpedoes during the first year or two of WW II was abysmal at best, with failures to explode and inability to maintain accurate depths, the failure to at least try her co-invention was not exactly the Navy's proudest hour.
At least she eventually was recognized for her attempt to contribute to the war effort, and to be more than just a pretty face (and figure) in a USO show.....
