Yes, that and the coffee mug in Detour are great examples. I love that element.
The surreal seems, at least in part, coming from German expressionism, Fritz Lang in particular perhaps, or from a more general artistic influence from cubism, Dali, Kafka,...
At any rate, I like it because it seems to break through the falseness of reality that arises in certain ways.
Lang's Dr. Mabuse films, and M and Metropolis, all are noir-suffused, and the surreal elements are there in all those films. You could say that Hitchcock was heavily influenced by this strain too. Spellbound, among others, employs surreal elements.
I guess it's always been there. I just never connected the dots before.
