As to evidence that people really did go to steambaths in New York, Jack Lemmon ends up in one in The Apartment when Fred MacMurray takes over his home for a tryst with Shirley MacLaine. Jack's character has a cold and a steambath was thought to be a good way to treat it. I believe the steambaths were a part of Eastern European immigrant culture in NYC and really did exist.
Not even close to a noir, but MacMurray plays a man far, far removed from the dad of My Three Sons.
