A truly great actor who, as I mentioned in a recent post about the comparable Robert Ryan, is one of the most artistically serious actors ever to grace the American screen. His record of performances after the age of 45 is incomparable; no film actor has ever had a better "second half." Here's a partial filmography:
Elmer Gantry (Richard Brooks, 1960)
Birdman of Alcatraz (John Frankenheimer, 1962)
The Leopard (Luchino Visconti, 1963)
Seven Days in May (John Frankenheimer, 1964)
The Professionals (Richard Brooks, 1966)
The Swimmer (Frank Perry, 1968)
Ulzana's Raid (Robert Aldrich, 1972)
Conversation Piece (Luchino Visconti, 1974)
Buffalo Bill and the Indians (Robert Altman, 1976)
1900 (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1976)
Go Tell the Spartans (Ted Post, 1978)
Atlantic City (Louis Malle, 1980)
Local Hero (Bill Forsyth, 1983)
Rocket Gibraltar (Daniel Petrie, 1988)
Field of Dreams (Phil Alden Robinson, 1989)
Lancaster's contribution to every one of those films is profound. C'est magnifique.
