I don't even think it's a debatable point, hands down, Ryan is one of the top five actors that American cinema has produced. The Chicago Reader article that Dan brought to our attention was most illuminating. He had many great performances, but I'll never forget the mixture of arrogance, menace and contempt he betrays in his scene with Robert Duvall in The Outfit. I enjoy playing it over and over.
