I just came back from almost 3 weeks in SF. I always make a pilgrimage to Bacall's apt. at Montgomery and Filbert. I too noticed the "for sale" sign.
Wouldn't it be great if the Film Noir Foundation bought, or possibly leased, it for their office? I have found that the best way to approach the building is to park in the Coit Tower parking lot and then make the steep journey down a series of brick steps until you reach the bottom at Montgomery Street.
The wooden steps that the bandaged Bogie climbs in Dark Passage are now concrete, but the ambience of the apt. building and the Filbert street steps haven't noticeably changed since 1947. On a sunny day, those trees around Filbert street are populated by wild parrots.
