Absolutely!! That film is virtually a text book of film noir style and technique. As for Lorre's character, I think he's more or less used as a conduit between perceived reality and the dream logic that dominates the way we watch the film. Perhaps that wasn't the way the filmmakers intended it to be, but it comes off that way to me. Incidentally, I think it's a sinful shame that Warner's has neglected to include this seminal film in any of their noir box sets. A "Warner Archive" selection (should that come to pass) just won't cut it; it needs a more formal and official release.
