I located a video copy of "Stranger on the Third Floor" at a public library a few years ago. I am not sure if it is available commercially now.
Initially, I was not completely sold since it is obvious to everyone in the audience that Peter Lorre is the actual criminal, but as time went by I came to appreciate the art direction and cinematography more and more. It also occurred to me that the fact that everybody in the audience could see through Lorre's character, but nobody on screen could was what made it extremely noir.
Boris Ingster's reputation could be assured on the basis of this film alone. It was a movie movie.
