Great stuff Don...the idea of a vegetable market being a cutthroat capitalist society in microcosm by one reviewer and by another, the displaced apples in the field as so many corpses on a beachhead or battlefield is really strong and reminds one that many of these cinematic auteurs had more than just crime on their minds...and too many of them would later pay for their socialist leanings, winding up on the dreaded blacklist. I woinder if Michael Moore could have made a good noir...No, I don't think so, he paints everything with so black a brush there wouldn't be any chiaroscuro, shadows, or subtle grays...just a black screen...he's just too obvious. These guys were the real deal.
