Somebody on another site called Van Zandt the "Steve Buscemi" of 1947...if you look closely at the photo of him checking the file box(not sure from what film), there is a physical resemblance and certainly in the swarthy, sleazy characters they both played... Never making that next step to stardom his depression of being merely a bit player (in 189 films!) drove him to suicide in his early fifties. Yet another died to young casualty of Noir Wars of the 40's and 50's.
