I nearly got fired for using the word 'apotheosis'.
I don't think it was a word I'd ever written or said before but it came from somewhere and I used in a review of a new album I didn't like by a band I really didn't like.
So I get called in by my editor who says, 'What the f*ck are you doing using ten dollar words like 'apotheosis'?' We're a daily newspaper, not frigging 'Rolling Stone' and you're a record reviewer, not some jumped-up 'music journalist' or 'rock critic'. So write it straight or go someplace else. Understand?'
Several years later, I did go someplace else and as far as I remember so did the word. I was kind of glad to see it here.
