I saw some photos of really trashed sections of Detroit recently and remarked that it looked like WW II occurred there. That put me in mind of London during the Blitz, and of the many bombed-out cities of Europe, and how they must have looked even much worse.
Japan didn't have as many brick and cement buildings, so having seen photos of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I had a pretty good idea what they must have looked like.
