You will be rewarded with the Nikkatsu noir. Rusty Knife (58) is also very good. The leads are the same as in I Am Waiting (57). They married in 1960 and remained married until his death in 1987. There is plenty of plot, action, and noir photography. The characters are drawn in some depth with honest and blunt writing that is also bold and unafraid to paint a person as what he or she is. Isolation of the human being is one theme in both. Love does not conquer all, but people give it a try. Another focus is anguish over some past misdeeds. A third is revenge. These characters seem not to have heard that "vengeance is mine, saith the Lord." That would spoil the fun of their depiction as fallen and unredeemed creatures.
The noir western category may be much larger than has been thought, as you suggest. It seems that noir infused a good many genres. It also appears that Randolph Scott took a leading role as producer in bringing adult western stories to the screen.
