Carlton Forbes, a three-year letterman for West Virginia University from 1995-98, died unexpectedly at the age of 32.
"It's an absolute tragedy," said Bill Kirelawich, who coached him as a nose guard on the defensive line. "We're told he was playing in a flag football game and just keeled over. It's shocking. Carlton was a wonderful, smart kid. He was a fine, fine person. He had everything a college football player should be."
Forbes was employed as a vice principal at a high school in the Atlanta area. He graduated from WVU in secondary education with a specialization in mathematics and had been a teacher.
"He was a great kid," retired WVU coach Don Nehlen said Monday night. "He wasn't a great player, but he was a solid player. We recruited him out of Florida. His coach at Fort Lauderdale was Rick Perry, a graduate of Fairmont State."
Forbes had never played football before he came to the United States from Jamaica in 1993. What's more, he had played just one year before coming to West Virginia.
Kirelawich said he did his student teaching for wife Maggie while attending WVU.
In all, Forbes played in 41 games as a Mountaineer. He was credited with 50 tackles and 34 assists.
WVU coaches named him Ideal Mountaineer Man on defense one year. Forbes made the Big East Scholar-Athlete team in 1995. He also was on the Athletic Director's Academic Honor Roll.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
