I agree. WVU is in a Catch-22 situation right now. When Coach Rod or his staff visit the homes of 4 Star receiver recruits, what current evidence can he provide them of a hope for future "All-American" status, which all great 17 year old high-school receivers want to know and talk about mostly during the recruiting process.
Even with the future promise of a throwing QB like Charlie Russell, WVU still is still going gung-ho, and rightly so, for the QB guy from Jeannette, PA (you JR fanatics can fill in the blanks)...
I am old, and the memory doesn't work well anymore.
But to my dying day, I say, GOOOO, MOUNTAINEERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

: I too agree with what many of you have
: said, that if we don't come up with
: more of a passing game, we won't beat
: the Sooners. More importantly, Coach
: Rod really needs to incorporate alot
: more of a passing game next year if the
: Mounties intend to get over the hump
: and possibly go unbeaten. If White and
: Slaton come back, add a couple of
: kick-butt receivers, it could be highly
: possible. LET'S GOOOOOO MOUNTAINEERS!!!

: Good comments from you guys. Yes, what
: do
: we do when we absorb a loss, whether it
: is as significant as the death of a
: loved one, or, less significantly, the
: loss of a chance for our revered
: Mountaineers to play in the BCS Bowl
: Game?
:
: But, I am hoping Coach Rod is
: intensifying his efforts to find more
: receivers in his recruiting this
: year--like Russ pointed out, and I
: agree, our passing game will only
: improve once we get a couple of big
: time catchers of the ball.
:
: Oklahoma poses a MIGHTY MOUNTAINEER
: challenge--we may need to resurrect
: Chico's Ice Cream Salon in Motown
: before this football year is
: finished!!! Oklahoma and USC are the
: best teams in the nation at this
: point--WVU would have killed Ohio
: State; and they would have given LSU
: all that they could handle, and in
: fashion, have WVU would have won in
: three overtimes!!!
:
: Hemingway: "Isn't it pretty to
: think so."
:
: Gooo Mountaineers!
:
: Let's remember the good things about
: this season:
:
: We finished 10-2.
:
: We tied for first in our league with a
: team that we beat by 35 points or so.
:
: We had the Big East Offensive Player of
: the Year, and he should have won the
: Heisman as well.
:
: We are playing in a BCS bowl, for the
: second time in three years.
:
: Probably, Slaton will decide to come
: back for another year--I think he and
: Pat have BFF stuff going on.
:
: Rod will have figured out how to
: incorporate Devine, and compensate for
: Schmidt's absence.
:
: Coach Rod will have incorporated more
: of a passing game into his spread
: offense system.
:
: The defense will be the biggest
: challenge, once again. Don't we lose
: Dykes, Magro, Wickes, and about 4 other
: important guys?
:
: We will win 9-10 games again next year,
: and maybe 12! I am no longer looking
: for the brass ring--just like WVU
: finally beat Penn State in 84, WVU will
: finally win a national championship.
: Just keep faith, and keep believing. I
: hope it will be in my lifetime.

: I agree, as much as the loss was
: horrible, overall, it was a good
: season. The two losses showed horrible
: play, and yet they were not lost by
: large margins. A lot of good teams
: lost to the unranked this year. So as
: far as recruiting goes, we're not the
: only ones in this boat. So let's pic
: up our britches and stomp some sooners!
: Top 5 or 10 and a couple big bowl game
: wins goes a long way for recuiting.

: Like you say, life goes on. As bad as
: "the loss' hurts, the fact is that
: this team was 12 points away from an
: undefeated season. We're playing the #3
: ranked team in the country and I think
: we can beat'm. We end up in the top 5
: and if that doesn't help recruiting
: then somethings wrong. Prospective
: recruits should ask themselves if they
: would rather be home watching the
: Fiesta Bowl like Pitt or be playing in
: it. Goooooooooooooo Mountaineers

: Now that the dust has settled, let’s
: lick
: our wounds and prepare to continue
: life. I hope some of the kids on the
: football team will read this. Many
: severe things have been said about the
: loss and negative words have been used.
: It was a bad day! Pitt will use this
: win over WVU in its PR forever. The
: man said “these are the times that try
: men’s souls.” The past is gone and
: nothing can be done to change it. It
: had been said that sports do not build
: character, they reveal it. Now is the
: time that the character of this team
: and its members as individuals will be
: tested. The world will see if they
: recover their poise and show their true
: metal. Oklahoma will likely be the
: best team they have faced.
:
: I am reminded about a story about
: former basketball coach Fred Shause
: (sp?) when Jerry West was a freshman.
: In those days, freshman were not
: allowed to play on the varsity team.
: There were freshmen teams like junior
: varsity teams. Every year we played
: Pitt twice, home and home. In the
: first game against Pitt before the
: varsity game, the WVU freshmen lost to
: the Pitt freshmen, coach Fred Schause
: (sp?) went into the freshmen locker
: room and assailed them loudly. Coach
: Schause (sp?) was an imposing man – 6’
: – 8” and all muscle. He yelled at them
: “When you play against Pitt, it’s
: different!!!” That group never lost to
: Pitt again. I hope that the
: uderclassmen on the team become filled
: with such a deep firm resolve. Let’s
: not lose to Pitt again!!

: Rancid Mountaineer
