I have a reproduction of a 1906 Sears & Roebuck catalog, and it has several models of cooking stoves that used gasoline for fuel. The tank was outside the home and had a small copper pipe running to the stove where it "dripped" a small amount of gas into a chamber. The vapors are what ignited. There's a large warning on the page telling purchasers to always use the best gas possible to prevent gumming up the works and possible explosion. I'd never heard of them before.
