Posted by Chelsea on March 27, 2006, 4:56 pm, in reply to "Godly Play" I have read the book "Godly Play" and was immediately turned off by the author's strong Protestant influence. The program is a bit intellectual "heady" and for a novice it probably isn't a good place to start. The author studied under Sofia Cavalletti and claims that his own work "does not attempt to duplicate her tremendous contributions. Instead, I have tried to experiment with and extend what she has already achieved." There are many similarities between Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and Godly Play and I see those similarities paralleling the similarities between Protestantism and Catholicism. For instance, Protestants have watered down the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass into a sort of community meal and the Godly Play program follows along those Protestant lines. For someone who is just getting started or still has a lot to learn from the Catechesis Program, I would suggest sticking to Catechesis of the Good Shepherd because it is much richer and much more Catholic. For those who have already have the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd training and feel they have a mature handle on it, they will probably gain some useful ideas from the Godly Play program.
