I'm troubled by the over-use of the word "relationship" in the media when describing the Queen's role in Canada. On one level, it's entirely appropriate, given the emotional qualities inherent in constitutional monarchy. On the other hand, however, it seems to suggest that HM is simply a nice lady who waves to us with an affectionate hand, but is otherwise irrelevant as far as Canada is concerned.
In many ways, actually, the over-use of "relationship" is similar to the media's often-repeated suggestion that Canada is "one of the royal family's 'favourite' countries to visit," as though Canada was simply one nation amongst many that they could visit while on holiday, as it were. If Canada is really a constitutional monarchy, then why is the media using this language?
