Exactly. What some republicans refer to as "our evolution" (read, making the monarchy as irrelevant as possible to Canadians by scrapping its symbolism and conjuring up a yarn about a supposedly "new spirit of Canadianism" to justify such an approach) was either done to appease a minority of French-Canadian sovereigntists, "pure-Canada" thinkers in English Canada, or, yes, grey-suited politicians who didn't want to be overshadowed.
