Republicans frequently use the "they don't live here" argument as justification for their xenophobic, bigoted stance against the monarchy. Yet, whenever I read such statements, I wonder: what of a person born to Canadian parents living abroad? Is he or she any less Canadian because of their circumstances? Republicans stick to the legal parameters of citizenship to affirm such a person's "Canadianness", but I don't buy the belief that nationality is defined merely by changeable law. Rather, it's my opinion that one can be Canadian if one is intimately familiar with the nation, its history and its people, as the members of our Royal Family are; and they obviously don't need to live here on a permanent basis to be so attached.
