With regards to "the people" (another buzz word?) I find it interesting that no Monarch, Governor General, or Lieutenant Governor (or Prime Minister, for that matter) has been assasinated by fanatical "people."
The only other real serious crises involving the crown in the modern Commonwealth (besides Canada's affair of 1926) have been in Australia in 1975 (dismissal of a government) and in Papua New Guinea in 1991 (near-removal of the Governor General).
I find the ignorance some Canadians perpetuate at news-stories relating to the Canadian Crown to be mildly amusing:
"How many millions of dollar will be wasted for that visit that could be better used somewhere else in Canada. We do not need this out-of-date system as they do not do anything for us. When are people going to realize that we pay the Queen millions per year not including the money for the Governor-General and Lieutenant-Governors and all of this for nothing in return.
It is time that we move forward and we become a republic.
Please stay home and leave us alone."
"Another monumental waste of our tax dollars. It's time for Canada to wake up and tuck HRH away with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. All three are totally irrelevent."
"Maybe its time to let the fresh air of democracy be the wind of change.
an elected, effective and executive governor general?
and bring the senate along , kicking and fussing, too"
It seems Canadians want a republic for two reasons: monarchy somehow doesn't represent the best of Canada and it wastes tax dollars (another catchphrase). The Crown also gets most of the blame for issues that are really stirred up by ELECTED politicians. Go figure.
