You're completely right. 'Election' is a buzz-word. Electing a partisan head of state would actually hinder democracy, once you take a look at it. This is also why some want to elect judges, like in the US. Take, for example, a quote from the Letters section from my hometown (in the US) newspaper:
'As a former judge told me sometime ago, "Judges are aware of community support for stiff sentences or the lack of it. They are guided by what the citizens want."'
Bad idea! If Canada's sovereignty resided in the people, then sure, whatever. But Canada has a monarch, and it's the job of our institutions to determine the right balance between the Crown's guidance and the need for public inclusion.
