Despite what Ottawa has been telling Canadians for almost 40 years, state-mandated multiculturalism has nothing whatsoever to do with admitting immigrants from diverse backgrounds. Both of these are true: (1)Some of the most vociferous republicans around are from old Canadian families of British ancestry, and some of the staunchest monarchists are recent immigrants of non-European heritage; (2) By denying that there is such a thing as Canadian culture (which, when it existed, was acknowledged to include monarchism--see George Grant), multiculturalism HAS undermined the monarchy.
