I read that the Monarch actually has two bodies, a natural one and a political one. The Governor General represents the political body of the Queen, that is, the office/institution of the Crown. The Crown, of course, is not the GG' personal powers, because he or she exercises the powers of the Crown which are vested in the monarch.
I don't think the Governors General themselves are naturally republican, but I do think the folks running Rideau Hall (the "Household") are. Indeed, Rideau Hall also places a heavy importance on the "Canadian" Governors, as if the French and British ones are not important.
