The British copied the design and general criteria from the Canadian Memorial Cross which was established in 1919. New Zealand also duplicated the Canadian Memorial Cross during the Second World war (with fern leaves in place of maple leaves), and the British worked closely with Canadian authorities to develop the Elizabeth Cross, which is essentially a British version of the Canadian Memorial Cross. The main difference is that the Canadian Memorial Cross, since 1944 has been suspended from a brooch, while the Elizabeth Cross has a pin back. It is nice to see the UK using some of the successful Canadian ideas in relation to honours.
