That's just it though, as Sovereign, and Heir to the Throne, they can't take on too much of private affairs. Their actions are seen as those of the nation(s).
They can, however, go on private vacations to Commonwealth realms without an invitation, or to other countries without approval from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. I believe The Prince of Wales's 1998 visit to Vancouver was partly a "private holiday". The late Princess of Wales used to vacation on St. Kitts and Nevis without invitation from that government.
Similarly, the President of Ireland can vacation, but I doubt she can go on "working visits" in support of various charities or foundations around the world.
