This is an old old issue. The Rae government began removing THE KING'S HIGHWAY from the Ontario signs in late 1993, and then when the Harris Conservatives came to power they continued the process. I wrote to the Minister responsible at the time Al Paladini and received a curt letter back saying that the signs weren't bilingual and that I should be happy that we were keeping the "distinctive Crown design." The signs were supposed to be changed in 1953, but the old Ontario Ministry of Transport and Communication never got around to it. They are technically "The Queen's Highways," even though the traffic act and MTO regulations refer to them as "The King's Highway." You still see a few of the old signs around Ontario, but they are pretty scarce. As a side note, in Quebec until early 1960s the main highways were known colloquially as "les chemin du roy." This designation only existed in regulation and the Quebec signs never carried this designation.
