Dear Ms. Bonnie Brooks,
I hope you had a wonderful Victoria Day weekend, I know mine was spoiled when reading the Saturday Newspaper.
While reading the Saturday Montreal Gazette the Hudson Bay Store has two ads in saying we are open on National Patriot's Day Monday May 18th. (See attached ads)
Well the founders of Hudson Bay Company and the Morgan chain of stores must be rolling in their graves reading this ad... As far as I know this is first time the Bay has referred to the day as National Patriot’s Day.
The company was founded by Royal Charter, how the present administrators forget their own company’s history.
Victoria Day is a national holiday while the so called Patriot’s Day was coined by the P.Q. Government The holiday was instated by the Government of Quebec in 2003, according to the then Premier of Quebec Bernard Landry: "to underline the importance of the struggle of the patriots of 1837 – 1838 for the national recognition of our people, for its political liberty and to obtain a democratic system of government." ...
Victoria Day takes precedence over any so called holiday as it is a National Holiday.
Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean has issued a most gracious message:
"May 15, 2009
Victoria Day provides Canadians with an opportunity to rejoice in our heritage and to pay homage to Her Majesty The Queen. It is also a day to remember past kings and queens who were instrumental in building this country. The Crown in Canada is a vital part of our national identity, and that bond is strengthened by the love and respect Canadians have for the Royal Family. As we continue to grow as a country we remember and honour our past, while celebrating our sovereignty and the bright future to which every Canadian contributes.
On Victoria Day, let us toast Her Majesty, reflect on our history and celebrate the country we all call home. I wish you all a most enjoyable day."
You will note that the Governor General does not mention National Patriot’s Day!
I hope in the future the Hudson Bay Company will honour the heritage of Canada and their own company history and call holidays by their proper names...
“GOD SAVE THE QUEEN”
Sincerely
Gary W. Sims
