you can organize a neighborhood security watch. my mom has organized one in our neighborhood... and if there is already one in your neighborhood, you can join it. it's nice because a police officer comes to the meeting and talks with everyone, telling them what to watch out for and what they can do to make their homes and their neighborhoods safer. also, you could think about getting a home security system... sometimes they can be a little expensive, but it might give you better peace of mind. and try to always lock all doors, even if someone is home. hope that helps! =)
