Posted by Nords Apparently the Army Corps of Engineers has some responsibility for Roosevelt (since they built it with federal money in 1933) but their funding has been diverted to rebuild New Orleans. He'll still be trying for federal funds. Castle & Cooke may be asked to pay for part of the bridge if they intend to build homes on Koa Ridge. He said it would be difficult to widen the highway by carving into the bluffs, but more lanes could be built on the bridge's west side. Another proposal is to build a new bridge that straightens out Kam Highway's approaches from north & south-- moving the bridge further makai and rerouting Kam Hwy through a corner of Central Oahu Regional Park. A four-lane bridge would also try to add bicycle lanes or fund the bicycle conversion of the old road through the gulch between Mililani's Anania Drive and Waipio's Ka Uka. (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2004/Nov/15/ln/ln19p.html) He also mentioned that he's asked the state to cut back the weeds & haole koa trees along the east side of Kam Hwy behind the homes. That clears a fire lane (as well as a small firebreak) in case there's another gulch fire like 1998 or 2004. I noticed the weeds have been whacked but he's still asking for a chainsaw crew to take care of the trees. Ryan Yamane said he'll write about the bridge in the next newsletter and keep me posted.

Rep Yamane called Tuesday to say that he'll support more money for the bridge planning to evaluate a Meheula-Paiwa version.
