Mary@mary-kenny.com,
Dear Mary Kenny,
In your article in today's Irish Independent 'How boy soldier became a deft recruiting officer' [1] you refer to the Afghan conflict as an act of 'defence'. You also criticise the short sightedness of peaceniks and hippies, who only 'enhance the iron dominance of tyrants and oppressors'. Yet peace, pacifism and defence are not the issues. We (and by 'we' I mean those that support the continued foreign occupation of Middle Eastern countries and the invasions that preceded them) have found ourselves on the wrong side of peace.
The act of aggression, the initial invasion, that spawned this conflict precluded any future claim to self defence. And this stark fact cannot be obscured by any amount of diversionary comparison with legitimate defence against Nazi aggression. It is this reality that exposes the sad truth behind Harry's misplaced confidence in his and his army's stern benevolence... "We Do Bad Things To Bad People." He is one of those bad people.
His service was, as your headline suggests, a crude propaganda ploy. It is unfortunate you decided not to note that in the article itself.
Yours sincerely,
David Manning
