My son opened one up for a 4-H project. In my estimation it had no right to be able to run. The previous owner must have let it run out of oil. There was a gob of aluminum on the crank journal that had once been on the connector rod. (to which it is bolted). The cylinder walls were scored. There is no way that thing could run. We buttoned it back up, lubed it, gassed it up and she commenced to roar. Blew blue smoke for a bit, but when she warmed up, she sounded just like a new one.
The design hasn't changed much, since the early days.
It's been said that if you count total numbers of engines, B/S are the largest manufacturer of engines in the world. 'Course they make them only one cylinder at a time.
