Posted by SEXTON on February 5, 2007, 4:03 pm, in reply to "Re: Fundraiser cancelled" I think a strong Division I Football program will definitely help all aspects of other UTA Athetic programs, financially and in recruiting. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the "club" team has a slight chance of being successful and therefore do not think that it will help the other sports. Even if I am completely wrong, I think it still would be a long time before we saw any real benefits. I think the biggest event that will have an immediate impact will be the approval and construction of the Special Event Center. --Previous Message--

Burrows, agree with your assessment of Sam, however have a few points. Here's my 2 cents (and I'll probably get change back!)
1. I agree with the thought of getting football back at UTA. As unfair as it may seem, having a football program will solidify UTA's athletic program and cause the changes needed for UTA to be recognized as a legitimate Division I Athletic Program (the likes of a UT, TCU, etc), gain the support of the school and faculty, and develop a strong Athletic Department.
2. Sam's efforts again, although respectable, may have a negative effect if they do take the field. If they flop, and there is no support then the President (Spaniolo) might doubt the support that a Division I program would have. On the other hand, if they do well and get support, then Spaniolo may decide that a football team isn't needed. I doubt the ladder as this "club" team is entering an amateur football league, not college wannabe's.
3. Sam also needs to get the message...if he wants support, he and his team are going to have to show support. This football club team is going to need to show up at all athletic events (basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, etc). It's not just about football.
: Sam's ok. He's doing his best to generate
: interest in football for UTA by starting a
: club which is a very difficult thing to do.
: The thing is, there actually is a strong
: movement out there from alums and others
: (completely separate from what Sam is doing)
: to get football going again for UTA so I
: don't know if his club will help in that
: cause or not. At first I thought it could
: but now I'm not so sure.
:
: I do know this...a strong football program
: will definitely help recruiting for
: baseball; simply because it is an important
: part of a college student's experience. In
: fact, hurrying up getting that new athletics
: center built for basketball and volleball
: will also provide a boost. UTA is no longer
: a commuter school if you haven't noticed.
: There are around 10,000 students living on
: or right near the campus. So the stronger
: our overall athletics program is, the better
: it will be for each team.
:
: Sam's heart is in the right place and he is
: fiery in his determination and I respect him
: for that so I'll let him post every once in
: a while even though it isn't baseball.
:
: My question to all of you out there is this:
: If the club team hits the field would that
: help or hurt recruiting for baseball and
: other sports? Would prospective athletes
: see it as a joke or as a refusal on the
: school's part to field a team? As I said
: before, a strong program will help us, but
: would a club team help, hurt, or do nothing?
:
: Would love to hear somebody else's take...

: The Maverick Football Club Black Tie
: Fundraiser that was planned for Feb 9th has
: been cancelled due to lack of intrest. We
: will continue to try and raise funds and
: sell sponsorships, as the new "risk
: management" stipulations imposed on us
: by Student Affiars and Campus Rec has just
: about depleted our funds. We will keep
: fighting, and we will see you all at
: Maverick Stadium on Feb 24th.
:
: GO MAVS!!!
