The answer is: d. guitar.
Austrian Fr. Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics in German, and the choir director, Franz Xaver Gruber, wrote the melody on December 24, 1818. It was performed the next day in St. Nicholas churvh in Oberndorf, Austria.
In German, the song is called "Stille Nacht." Legend has it that the song was composed for guitar, because the church organ was broken, but this has never been confirmed.
