matrox media tools withiout the matrox card

Hi All,
Someone told me that he was able to make media tools work on a simple 1394-FW card for capturing only purpose.
This allows him to have a full time work with the X100 that is now availble for editing tasks only.
Can anyone tell me how to do this? (this guy do not want to tell me the way to do it)
