Whatever you get don't overspend.
I thought I got a great deal on my Sony DRU500A for $260 earlier this year and it is now down to $160.
Generic IDE DVD+/- are less than $100 in California and Fry's recently had a no-brand DVD+&-RW for $79.
Double density burners are around the corner and they are already shipping Blue Laser units capable of writing 40 GB HD DVDs.
