The original and widely compatible format is -R.
Most newer DVD players (desktops) will also handle +R. However most older DVD players won't.
The challenge is determining which desktop player the movie will most likely be viewed in and a lot of us choose for this reason to stick with -R media.
Plus (+) media does offer some potential advantages in terms of recording speed. Plextor's new DVD writer records at 4x for -R but reaches up to 8x for +R.
