With hindsight

Would it have been better to buy Kenilworth Road back from the Council and develop it to hold around 20,000?

Personally I don't want to go as you know the new place will basically just be a shit depressing concrete cinema-type place.

Tell me exactly how, given the location of KR, you consider it could be developed to hold 20,000 ?

Can you really not understand the difference between how grounds were in 1959 and how they are now?

yes, they had a football pitch and facilities to fit spectators in to watch just like new builds today. So smart arse remarks from you are not really necessary. There were plans to put in a cantilever stand to replace the main stand back in the day and permission to extend the height of the Bobbers and Oak in this day and age could be granted. Do you believe what we go to watch will be enhanced by leaving Kenilworth Road? And to cap it all, there might be a chance of getting it completed before you and I expire.

Back then, there was a massive open terrace which held many more than it does now it is all seats. Similarly, the Enclosure. Although there is a form of standing in the Oak Road end, it is completely different to the standing in there in the old days. Clubs weren't subject to the same health and safety regulations back then.
I am not convinced that you are right about being able to increase the height of those stands and, even if they could, I can't see that that would increase capacity - I doubt that a two tier stand would be possible and you can't go any further back. I also doubt that they would be allowed to increase capacity because of the lack of accessibility. Another problem would be that the Bobbers already has camera positions on the top of it.
Other than all of that, capacity would have to be reduced considerably whilst the work was carried out.
All of this for a ground that already has numerous problems that can only be "patched up".
Whilst I will be sorry in one way to leave KR, it is inevitable if the club is to survive in the long term.

40 years ago, in his Football Grounds book, Simon Inglis pointed out that any plans to expand on the Main Stand side were hamstrung by the fact that the stand could only be accessed from either end. The only possible option would be to build over the busway/road (similar to what was done at Atletico Madrid's stadium) but that sounds like it would be prohibitively expensive - probably not far short of building a new ground.

I believe the Oak cannot be extended upwards because of overshadowing the houses at the top of Beech and Ivy Roads and the Oak Road end of Beech Path.
