Our signings this season
Posted by Old poster on 6/5/2024, 19:12:45
Japanese Carden, Kabore and Giles, poor. Anderson, Ogbene, Lokongo, Brown injury prone. Chong hit an miss. Kaminski and Barkley, quality.
Perhaps it's a good thing we didn't spend anymore money given that return.
Hashioka - Dumped in the deep end, give him time next season.
Giles - Didnt settle & didnt play enough to have any impact.
Anderson - Looked promising but insta crocked.
Ogbene - Quality signing and was big for us throughout until injury, more to come from him.
Brown - Didnt get too much of a sniff before the injury reaper came for him, be helpful next season.
Chong - Started off only looking forward but has improved his overall play and is a real injection of energy.
Kaminski - Quality keeper, kicking is a bit crap but who cares we would be on -100 like Sheffield without him.
Barkley - Burst into it and gave us some real magic but he seem to be tiring and probs moving on.
Kabore & Lokonga are both loans who have filled holes well enough and shouldnt be sniffed at if we got to sign them in any way.
Cant see the negativity youve suggested tbh, from where we were and to what weve become is a huge leap. The real test is all the comings and goings during the summer.
when you're on such a limited budget. Every signing has to be spot on. Moving forward be interesting to see what calibre of loans we get in next season. Can have five in the EFL
When you're on such a limited budget then to sign a player it literally has to be a player no-one else in this league (and even some below) wants for the same kind of role.
That effectively means that for every signing you are up against it and the odds are that they might struggle.
Our record transfer fee but no even one twentieth of an Enzo Fernandez. You simply aren't ever going to get every signing "spot on" under these strictures.
It's all guesswork though isn't it? We don't know if it was true he had problems settling and if it was it could be something unforeseen and personal.
It doesn't matter how much you spend on a player or how much you pay them. Being a highly paid professional doesn't in any way make them immune to the human condition.
I wouldn't say that Anderson, Ogbene, Lokonga or Brown are injury prone. They've had an injury which has prevented them playing currently. You might as well say Marv and Bell are injury prone. They're not. Burke and Potts are injury prone.
Hashioka hasn't had a long enough run to see how good he might be. Overall Kabore has been fine.
Chong has scored 5x from midfield. I wouldn't call him hit and miss. He's a solid player.
Marv only came to us on loan because he was recovering from a massive injury. In the next full season he gets another massive injury. Id say he's now in the injury prone bracket.
Andersen and Lokongas injuries seem to be unfortunate but they've both missed large chunks of the season.
I like Kabore but with Doughty pushing on so much (as was the intention with Giles) and given the quality in this league I do think a more pragmatic RWB might've been better. Kabore has a mistake in him and does not track far post runners.
Hashioka looks ok technically, jury is out ATM on whether he's an upgrade As I said below, it's a concern that Fred is preferred to him currently.
Given how we play with the wing backs if Hashioka doesn't offer more than Fred going forwards then that's not a good start, given Fred doesn't offer a huge amount at this level
Agree with the assessment on Chong, Kaminski and Barkley. Not the others. Getting 1 long term injury does not make you prone. Giles didn't get much chance.
The fact he isn't getting in the Hull side does say a lot. But then the Boro fans absolutely loved him. He wasn't helped by how good and reliable Doughty has been.
