The state of services in this country

Posted by AI Bot on 22/4/2024, 15:55:03

Recently moved house and expected 1 or 2 things to not run entirely smoothly but frankly I have been shocked at the amount of things, and I mean extremely basic things, that various service providers have got wrong. Here's a list:

    1. First things first, my buyers, agreed a completion date they couldn't possibly meet. Affected the whole chain, had to be rearranged.

    2. Transferring money to solicitor, banking app didn't work when updating password.

    3. Council tax, tried to update address online, wouldn't accept my account number which bloke on telephone confirmed was correct. He couldn't offer explanation why it wasn't accepted online.

    4. Advising water and electric suppliers completion date had changed. Required multiple phone calls as initial attempts didn't go through despite being assured they had.

    5. Van hire for the move. Quoted a price. Advised them completion date had changed, asked would there be any additional charge. Told no. When confirming new completion date a few days later price had gone up by about £60. Went elsewhere!

    6. Washing machine installation at new place. Bloke doesn't use the proper kit and waste pipe leaks. I end up buying the part he missed and fix it myself.

    7. Getting broadband set up. Bloke taking my details incorrectly puts my new address as place I have lived for 3+ years. I subsequently get email saying I have failed credit check but no reason given at that stage. After a lot of digging eventually find out why. Try to proceed with previously agreed deal, told it's expired and new deal is more expensive. Told have to dispute this in person at store where original deal was made. Can't be bothered so agree to new deal instead. Tell them I only want broadband not phone line as well. Next day get email explaining how they are going to install phone line. Also was expecting go live date but it is a generic email with that crucial bit of info left blank! Try to activate online account of new broadband supplier. Won't accept my password. End up in endless loop trying to resolve it.

    8. Opticians - update address in-store and reassured it has been done. Just checked it online to find it hasn't been done, phone them and just get an apology.

    9. Apply for water meter. Told to expect a call to arrange installation date. Don't get a call, except from engineer AFTER installation. Then get another call saying he's had to remove it as it was placed at point where it is a dual supply. It was only because my new neighbour spotted him and told him to remove it, otherwise I would have been paying for mine and next doors supply! Arrange for an internal meter instead. Just received an email instructing me to reply 'YES' if date suggested is suitable, immediately followed by more text in the email telling me not to reply as message has come from an unattended mailbox.

Fuck me, how can so many places get so much basic stuff so wrong?

I'm sure there's more, this is just the stuff off the top of my head.

My point is that this country is completely fucked because nobody seems to be capable of doing their job anymore.

What the fuck is going on?

      Don't forget the pot holes.

When they do eventually get filled, the workmanship is so shoddy that they are breaking up again within weeks.

That sounds all too familiar to our experience when moving last year. It is unbelievable and disappointing how service organisations are incapable (can't be bothered) to get anything right.

Entirely agree AB, same with everything. I hanker after the "good old days" when if you had a problem you simply went to the local office, spoke face to face with someone who knew his/her job and sorted things out.

E.g., electricity/gas board, water company, council, you can't do that now, they don't exist, it's all online.

Nobody seems capable of doing their job quickly or efficiently these days. I hate this computerized age.

Look at this government yet you seem shocked.

Reap what you sow I’m afraid.

All minor things compared to people who can't afford a home and stuck with parents or in expensive and small rented places. Or oldies with inadequate care. And the list goes on....what has happened to this country?

Most service companies whether private or government have the attitude over the last few years we can give the same level of service with half the workforce

The majority of office based workforce is still sat on its arse at home under ‘flexible working’, so can only fit you in between the school run, meeting a mate for coffee, cutting the grass, catching up on Coronation Street, and everything else that now comes before ‘work’.
