Should we consider getting a defensive coach in to help Rob out RE is clearly a great motivator and good at getting teams to storm forward and never give up, but the commentator on the Irish channel yesterday kept saying the defence doesn't know how to set up to receive an attack. As bad as yesterday was ,it's games like Bournemouth and Newcastle that have done is where we have thrown away 3 points purely because we couldn't set up a defence to frustrate the opposition

I don’t think a coach will change it, I think it’s down to the lack of quality. We don’t have a tall dominant centre back. Brentford had 3 and they dealt with us easily. If I’m honest, I’d have an overhaul in the summer and the only defender that I’d have starting is Mengi. I like osho but I don’t think he’s physical enough to be a centre back. Same applies to Bell. Controversial but I’d offload Burke. No point in him when he can’t play 5 games in a row and you’re lucky to get 50% of games out of him

A big problem is that the centre backs keep changing around - we are highest number of different centre back partnerships in the PL. I am no expert but I guess there are other "structural" problems for example the fact that our midfield loses the ball and then the opposition is right in on the back 3. I have never seen any other PL team suffer that as often as we do. Mind you to show how much I know I thought Lokonga coming back would help us defensively yesterday

Edwards has to take some of the blame. He wants them to be aggressive, man mark etc etc. But we're up against world class players and managers. They just drag them all over the pitch and run into the spaces created. One game, can't remember, Burke ended up down by the right touch line on halfway and Freddy was stood next to Mengi at centre half. You do not see any top team defend like that. They all defend zonally. Then you get the over aggression. Countless times we've seen players dive in, but get rolled, or miss it completely. Mengi against Haaland, Hashioki against Solanke, Doughty for the fourth goal in the same game. If he stands his ground, that ball goes back to the keeper and we probably get a draw. We've spent all season giving up countless opportunities. Their first goal yesterday. Two simple passes and we're cut wide open. Way way too easy.
