Where has the Sunderland play-off atmosphere gone?

Posted by Earls on 21/4/2024, 7:01:33

We’ve done all the right things as a fanbase, imo. Even yesterday, comparatively few people left - way fewer than Arsenal’s rubbish home support when they were 2-0 up against us.
And yet… Can anyone suggest why we haven’t come close to recreating the atmosphere we had for the play-off semi against Sunderland?
As poor as we were once it was 0-2, we never really got going as a crowd even before that. We’re undeniably loyal, but KR just hasn’t been as intimidating as I thought it might be.

IMO the atmosphere is usually pretty good until the opposition score. Brentford looked sharp, quick, fit. They had two good chances before they scored, and as soon as they did I just felt like it drained everything from everyone and the feeling of "not again" swept over the crowd.

There's only so many times we can come from behind, and it just felt like everyone was resigned to the fact that against an up for it Brentford team, our side of knackered and half fit players just didn't have anywhere near enough about them to mount a comeback.

In hindsight Brentford were a disastrous team to play. They're really good and recent results haven't reflected their performances. I think everyone sort of assumed beforehand that we'd in, because we 'had to'. Never works like that.

Some people did copious amounts of cocaine before Sunderland.

Unfortunately, I did say we have had games where it's been flat but the usual happy clappers were making out we are the loudest in the premier league. Seems like the fans need the players to get them going.

            Christmas

In my opinion the build up to Christmas is better than Christmas Day itself.

The rise up the leagues was brilliant and we done it in a way that nobody expected. It was brilliant fun.

But the reality of the Premier League is shit. The continual media scrutiny, the continual social media shit, the sanitising of the match day experience, the endless pissing about tickets, the continual threats to our own fans, the actual realisation that it’s all about 4 or so clubs.

For me been it’s akin to finally getting to shag Kylie Minogue only for her to shit the bed when you are in with her.

And if others are like me then I suspect these are reasons that it’s gone flat.

This doesn’t feel like football to me.

Has GS asked a few fans to lower expectations to help avoid scrutiny?

I've enjoyed being in the Prem and I want us to survive but I totally get your point. Nicely put

A Leeds fan was on here in the summer saying getting there was more fun than being there

Maybe if we stopped giving away two goal head starts to the opposition...
