    No Replays

Posted by RADSB on 19/4/2024, 8:44:11

The FA and the EPL jointly agreed that there should be no replays. Here's the F.A. announcement where they tuck it away under the heading -
"FA AND PREMIER LEAGUE AGREE TO STRENGTHEN EMIRATES FA CUP AND SUPPORT FOR GRASSROOTS"
    followed by the heading -

"Premier League will provide up to an additional £33 million for grassroots football on top of the £100 million it currently gives to good causes each season"

Clearly some camouflage here to try to soften the blow. Here's a link http://www.thefa.com/news/2024/apr/18/emirates-fa-cup-format-calendar-update-increased-premier-league-grassroots-funding-20241804

The out of touch F.A. Board who made the decision can be found here -

Outrageous behaviour to suit the top 6 at the expense of eveyone else.

Shocking decision as it affects the income of so many small clubs. Grimsby has come out against as has Tranmere. To think 732 clubs took part in the FA Cup and the decision to stop replays is based on 20 Premier League Clubs. Not sure all would have agreed - more likely to suit the top six or so who are involved in the Champions League.

Andy Burnham suggest writing to ones MP. The Football Governance Bill is before Parliament next Tuesday. He suggests that an amendment can be made which would not permit changes to any local Cup Tournaments unless a majority vote by all 732 club participants was held.

This decision shows the weakness of the FA when taking on the PL. Lets hope the governance bill passes and we can have an i dependent regulator.

I have emailed my MP today to suggest he follows the path outlined above. We have to protect our national game and that means looking after all clubs.

EFL had 4 members on the committee that drew up the new season calendar they must of been aware of the unfolding events.

Can we add “Premier League c####” to the F the Football League chant?

The scrapping of replays from the 3rd and 4th rounds has been bandied about for ages. The expanded European tournaments is just the excuse they have been looking for to implement it.

What I find particularly hard to understand is the motivation to extend it without consultation to the 1st and 2nd rounds, which have no impact whatsoever on the premier league.

Supposedly the reason is to do with any replays in rounds 1 and 2 shown on TV would supposedly clash with the extra Champions League games

It did cross my mind that might be a reason.

Then I thought no they surely can't use such a lame argument as that.

Of course on that basis they could continue with R1/2 replays but not have any televised. It's not ideal of course, televised replays often involve nonleague clubs so bang goes another source of revenue and national exposure, not to mention games on free to air TV.

                  Seriously?

They surely can't be too concerned that Tranmere vs Crewe is going to take audience away?

Then again, I know which I'd be more likely to watch.

For the most part (not all) it is hard to imagine a group of people less suitable to be charged with looking after something like the FA Cup . . .

That FA board - not so much a "Who's Who" of English football as a "Who????".

And that £33m will go a long way ...... probably not even as much as our beloved super duper clubs will make from the extra overseas friendlies they'll be able to squeeze in.

Interesting, though, that the FA Board includes Rick Parry, who, as 'leader' of the EFL, has done a spectacularly poor job of progressing negotiations with the EPL. (Witness the televised stuff with government)

Not a man to be trusted with a powerful position maybe?

Hopefully it wouldn't interest him, but surprised that the EFL haven't approached GS. Given he has operated within the national league, EFL and now the prem and his approach to fair wage, community and the betting industry.
Anyone without a Luton bias must see him as someone that could figure out this mess.
